El Ateneo

Today turned out to be a pretty good day considering the circumstances. I suppose I could’ve thought it a bad day if I had had to shell out $700 for a plane flight. It all depends on your outlook. It’s been a beautiful day. Went for a fabulous run. Exchanged money, ate lunch (I am up to six yogurts a day now; this is getting ridiculous! I’ve become obsessed with something I once thought I hated,) showered, and then went to El Ateneo.
El Ateneo is this awesome bookstore Audrey told me about months ago. It used to be a theatre, built in 1919, but now it’s a bookstore. I love bookstores. I remember one time someone asked me what my favorite place in the world was, and I’m pretty sure I said “The Borders on Lovers and Greenville.” Of course that was before they remodeled the whole dang thing – I doubt I’d even know my way around now. So I thought today, having saved a hefty sum of money, I’d surround myself with books. Not really for me, since I still have a few left to read, although I do want to read Che Guevara’s Motorcycle Diaries in Spanish, but I’m scared everyone who sees me read it will think I’m some sort of Commie Pinko. Couldn’t find it on my own, so Che can wait. But I did find a book for Woody. Because Lord knows what size he’ll be and I don’t exactly trust South American toy manufacturers with the sweetest boy in the world. So he got a book. What’s new? But this one was written in Argentina en castellano, and I figure it might be more authentic than his Dollar General translation books. Hopefully it will hold his attention, as an almost 15-month-old when I finally see him. Gosh, it’s been so long! But the real gift of course will be reading it to him. Emily says by the time I’m back in Texas he’ll be able to walk up to me and give me a hug! I hope he’ll recognize me enough to do so. (Who am I kidding? I’m sure he hugs strangers if they’ll let him.)
